BBB warns college students about identity theft

New IdentityTheft Scam

(WGEM) — Students are getting ready to head off to college and the Better Business Bureau says now is the time to have a conversation with your student about protecting their identity away from home.

New government data shows younger people lose money to fraud more frequently than older consumers.

Some ways to avoid that is to have sensitive mail sent to a parent’s home instead of a dorm or apartment, lock up important documents, and make sure their electronics have up-to-date with anti-virus software.

Mara Clingingsmith with the Better Business Bureau said, “monitor your bank accounts, your credit card statements. If you can monitor your credit reports, you get one free credit report each year from each of the three big ones. So if you get one every four months, you’re on a rotating cycle, and then if someone steals your identity, you can really minimize the damage.”

BBB officials also say if your student is shopping online urge them to check the company out first with the BBB. Also look for secure website with the padlock on the page and https in the URL.
