Lincoln, NE (July 25, 2018) – Bryan Health is using new palm scanning technology at patient registration to increase safety and protect against medical identity theft of patients.

“When people come through our doors, often times the first place they visit is our registration area,” said Jill Hull, patient access director at Bryan Health. “We want the check-in process to be as smooth as possible. More importantly, we want everyone’s personal information and privacy to be protected. This new technology allows us to improve the patient experience in both areas.”

Palm scanning is highly accurate. The process works by scanning the unique vein pattern in the palm of an individual’s hand. The scan uses harmless near-infrared light, the same type of light used in a TV remote control. Once scanned, an advanced algorithm processes the vein pattern to create an encrypted and protected digital file. The file is linked to the patient’s personal medical record.

During the first visit, individuals need to provide a government issued photo ID as proof of identity. Then, scans will be taken of the palm. A digital file is created and enrollment in the system is complete. At future visits, patients are asked for their date of birth and their palm will be scanned to immediately identify and link to their medical record.

Palm scanning technology is safe and provides many benefits:
Enhances patient safety
Protects against medical identity theft
Ensures privacy
Speeds up registration process

This type of recognition technology is currently used by many health care organizations across the United States for positive patient identification. Palm vein scans cannot be used by the legal system or law enforcement in any way. It is also not suitable for forensic analysis and is of no use in criminal investigations.

Palm scanning is currently being used at Bryan East Campus, Bryan West Campus, Bryan Physician Network office locations, Bryan LifePointe and Bryan Pine Lake Campus. It will be available at Bryan Urgent Care, Bryan Heart, and Crete Area Medical Center and Clinics in Crete, Friend and Wilber by September.
