Dashlane rolled out an update that aims to protect your identity as well as your passwords.

The new version 6.0 update to Dashlane adds an Identity Dashboard, enabling you to check the health of your passwords, view security notifications, receive alerts of Dark Web activities that affect you, and access such options as credit monitoring and identity theft insurance. Dashlane also now offers a virtual private network, or VPN, that you can use to browse the Web more securely. Plus, the new secure document storage lets you encrypt and save up to 1GB of password-protected files directly through Dashlane.

Programs such as Dashlane help you create, store, and apply complex passwords at secure websites so you don’t have to.

But the hazards of the Web go beyond just using weak passwords. Your activities and identity can be compromised by hackers, scammers, and other threats. To better protect you, password managers now have to move beyond their basic objective.

“We’re at a pivotal moment in digital identity,” Dashlane said in a blog post introducing the new version. “Life online has left behind a disorganized, unsecure trail of passwords, payments, personal information, emails, files, and more, that has led to massive breaches and data abuses — like the ones at Facebook, Equifax, and Exactis. These risks impact us all, and the problem is only getting worse. While protecting accounts with unique and complex passwords is a critical step in combating these online attacks, it is no longer enough. And at Dashlane, we realized we were in a unique position to build a simple, universal solution.”

Which of the new features you can access depends on which version of Dashlane you choose. A free option provides security alerts through the Identity Dashboard but limits you to 50 passwords on one device. For $4.99 a month, Dashlane Premium grants you an unlimited number of passwords synced across multiple devices and adds the VPN and Dark Web monitoring. And for $9.99 a month, the new Dashlane Premium Plus includes all the features of the other plans but kicks in credit monitoring, support for identity restoration, and up to $1 million of coverage for identity theft insurance.

Dashlane is available for Windows, Mac OS, iOS, and Android.
