Identity theft workshop offered – Mount Desert Islander

New IdentityTheft Scam

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — A workshop on identity theft will take place at the Southwest Harbor Public Library on Wednesday, April 18, from 2-4 p.m.

Identity theft is when someone uses another person’s name, credit card, social security number or other financial information to commit a crime. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that more than 9 million Americans per year face an identity theft-related problem.

Tom Chester, a financial adviser at Allen Insurance and Financial, and Southwest Harbor Police Chief Alan Brown will make a presentation on this very current topic. The workshop will address who is most vulnerable to identity theft and why, how someone can know their identity has been stolen, how to combat fraud and protect identities, the differences between credit monitoring and identity theft protection, what steps to take in the case of a stolen identity, and what has really happened to some victims of identity theft.

The workshop is free; preregistration is needed. Call the library at 244-7065.
