New IdentityTheft Scam

Police say 22-year-old from Malta faces felony charges

MALTA – A Malta man is charged using the identities of several unsuspecting victims to get himself more than $100,000 in jobless benefits, State Police said Friday.

On Thursday, Mathew R. Baldwin, 22, was arrested on felony identity theft and grand larceny charges after an investigation by the State Police Financial Crimes Unit, troopers based in Saratoga and Princetown, and the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office.

The probe began in October when it was discovered Baldwin was using stolen identities to certify state unemployment insurance benefits, police said. Baldwin was arraigned in Schenectady City Court and released to the supervision of probation, due to appear again in City Court on April 15.

Police say anyone who believes they are a victim of unemployment insurance fraud can report the fraudulent activity to the New York State Department of Labor. Visit https://dol.ny.gov/report-fraud for details, or call 888-598-2077.
