New IdentityTheft Scam

Julie K. Atkinson

Living in a digital world, it is easy to feel like your personal data is not secure these days. Turn on the news, and you are likely to see another story about identity theft or financial fraud. Or, despite checking the no thanks box, your personal info has been sold to another sales team bombarding you with unwanted phone calls, emails and social media ads.

Now there is a new threat to your personal information and pocketbook brewing in the legislature that would make wide-scale data mining of your property records easier than ever. Better yet, you’ll get to pay for it!

As your local register of deeds, I work to securely record proof of the sale, purchase or other transfer of real estate. We are here to ensure that when you buy a house, cabin, farm or other property that your ownership is locked in and protected from fraud, theft and scam artists. While these records are public information, there is a legal system in place to ensure our office is properly equipped to protect your real estate assets.

That security system is now at risk. Under Michigan House Bills 4729 – 4732, out-of-state Big Tech companies would essentially pay nothing to walk away with detailed personal and property information on millions of families from our files and use it to generate big profits for themselves or to sell to others. Not only do the bills make it easier for your public records to be spread around the planet for profit, but by eliminating the fees these billion-dollar companies currently must pay, the taxpayers will be left to find another way to fund the Register of Deeds system. You guessed it — from your taxes.

You can help us stop Big Tech from fleecing Michigan families. Contact your legislators today and ask them to oppose House Bills 4729-4732. You pay your own bills. Big Tech should pay their own bills, too. Let’s stop the Big Tech giveaway.
