New IdentityTheft Scam

Thief River Falls, MN (KFGO) – A chiropractor in Thief River Falls has been indicted for an insurance fraud scheme.

Steven Wiseth, 35, faces six counts of wire fraud and two counts of aggravated identity theft.

He is accused of conducting the scam at Health Quest Family Chiropractic between March 2013 and April 2015.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Wiseth held promotional events where he gave away free food, drinks, prizes, and gift certificates. After the events, he billed insurance companies for the ” that were not provided. In some cases, Wiseth used the personal and insurance information of attendees to bill the individuals’ insurance companies for services that were not provided, unbeknownst to the attendee. For example, on February 13, 2014, Wiseth held a promotional event at Health Quest that he referred to as ‘ValenSpine’s Day.’ Wiseth submitted bills to insurance companies representing that he had treated approximately 219 patients on that day, purporting to have provided approximately 641 services.”

Wiseth also submitted false bills for services by misrepresnting the services that were actually provided for patients.

Federal prosecutors say Wiseth billed insurance companies over $3.1 million for hundreds of treatments that were never done or were overbilled. The insurance company paid Wiseth and Health Quest more than $1.1 million.

Wiseth has surrendered his Minnesota chiropractic license.
