New IdentityTheft Scam

Cyber thieves were able to access customers’ credit card numbers and other data over a two-month period, reported Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.

The cyber threat over a two-month period came from a third party who had obtained customers’ user names and passwords to access their online accounts, said USA Today.

The activity was between April 26 and June 12, and Macy’s detected the threat June 11.

The unauthorized parties were able to access customer names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, birthday and debit or credit card numbers with expiration dates, said the report.

The cyber thief reportedly obtained the information from a source other than Macy’s.

The stores notified customers by email that their profile was blocked until the password is changed.

Customers were urged to remain vigilant and change the password on any online account using the same user name or password as their Macy’s account. Customers can also obtain a year of free identity theft protection.
